What is pickleball?
Pickleball is a paddle sport played on a 13.41 x 6.10 m court, similar to a badminton court, with a non-volley zone line located 2.13 m from the net. It is played using a solid paddle and a perforated plastic ball approximately 7 cm in diameter.
It is an easy-to-learn, entertaining sport that adapts to all skill levels, making it ideal for both indoor and outdoor play. Its dynamic and fast-paced nature makes matches engaging and suitable for players of all ages.
In Spain, pickleball is regulated by the Pickleball Committee of the Spanish Tennis Federation (RFET), which oversees licenses, official competitions, and the national ranking.
Who can play?
Pickleball is an inclusive and accessible sport for everyone, from young children to older adults. It can be played in singles or doubles, and it stands out for its strong social value, encouraging interaction and enjoyment among players.
It is a very easy sport to learn, making it ideal for beginners as well as for those who already practice other racket sports. To take part in official competitions, players must hold a standard tennis federation license or a specific pickleball license.
Pickleball is especially popular in the United States, where it is already played by nearly 50 million people. In Spain, the number of players continues to grow, and it is estimated that there were around 20,000 players in 2023.
How is pickleball played?
The most distinctive rules of pickleball are the double-bounce rule and the non-volley zone rule.
Under the double-bounce rule, the serving team and the receiving team must allow the ball to bounce once on each side before hitting it back to the opponent. The non-volley zone is an area 2.13 m (7 feet) from the net, where volleys are not allowed, not even if the player steps on the line that defines it. Players are allowed to enter this zone only to return a ball that has already bounced.
Regarding scoring, matches are usually played to 11 points, with a two-point margin required to win. Only the serving player or team can score points, following a system similar to traditional volleyball.
Pickleball can be played in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles, all of which are official competition formats.
Pickleball Court Details
Pickleball courts have standard dimensions of 13.41 m in length by 6.10 m in width, suitable for both singles and doubles matches. Measurements are taken from the outside edges of the court perimeter and the non-volley zone lines, which must be 5 cm wide and clearly contrast in color with the playing surface.
For comfortable play, the recommended minimum playing area is 9.14 m wide by 18.29 m long. In addition, a surrounding clearance of 3.05 m is advised, resulting in total dimensions of 12.19 m by 19.51 m. These measurements ensure safe and comfortable play while meeting official pickleball standards.
